Shooting for several films have resumed as restrictions get relaxed across the country. While permission for shooting in Kerala is yet to be given by the government, Malayalam films, including Bro Daddy, have commenced filming in Hyderabad.
Theatres are, however, yet to be reopened, leading to several big budget films, like Malik and Narappa opting for a direct-OTT release.
On that note, here are nine films and shows, including Malik and Narappa, that are releasing on streaming platforms this week:
1. Toofaan – Amazon Prime Video (July 16)
As per the official synopsis, Toofaan is set in Mumbai, where an orphaned boy grows up to be a local goon under forced circumstances. His life changes when he meets a bright and a compassionate young woman who guides him to take the right path. With love and guidance, he finds his calling in sports and begins his journey to become a world class boxer.
2. Fear Street Part Three: 1666 – Netflix (July 16)
Fear Street Part 3 is the final film in the Fear Street film trilogy. The trilogy started with Part 1 set in 1994 in which a group of teenagers discover that the terrifying events that have haunted their town for generations are all connected and that they may be the next targets. Fear Street jumped to 1978 in Part 2 and now concludes with Part 3 set in 1666.
3. Malik – Amazon Prime Video (July 15)
As per the official synopsis, Malik is a political thriller that chronicles the journey of Sulaiman Malid (Fahadh Faasil), a charismatic leader bestowed with unconditional love and loyalty from the people of his community who leads a revolution against authoritative forces that try to encroach on their lives. The film is a story of a past ridden with crime, death and pain that is recounted to Freddy, a juvenile criminal, who has been assigned to eliminate his estranged uncle Sulaiman, while behind bars. 4. Never Have I Ever Season 2 – Netflix (July 15)
After a traumatic year, Indian-American teen Devi wants to spruce up her social status, but friends, family and feelings make it difficult. Devi (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) deals with the everyday pressures of high school and drama at home, while also navigating new romantic relationships.
5. Vaazhl – SonyLiv (July 16)
Vaazhl is a light-hearted film, filmmaker Arun Prabu Purushothaman told Silverscreen India. “We have experimented with the script; the film breaks convention in terms of the plot devices used. It is a mixed-genre film,” he said, and added, “It is not a political film like Aruvi. It will cater to all age groups.”
Releasing on Sony Liv, the film, whose title means ‘to live’ in Tamil, is based on the travels of Arun’s childhood friend. “It is a travel film, and the story shifts from place to place,” the filmmaker said.
6. Narappa – Amazon Prime Video (July 20)
As per the official synopsis, Narappa, the official Telugu adaptation of the Tamil film Asuran, follows a farmer and his family hailing from a quaint village in Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh. Family is at the heart of the film and the story revolves around how the protagonist goes the extra mile to protect his loved ones and family pride.
7. Ikkat – Amazon Prime Video (July 21)
A Kannada comedy drama, Ikkat is set during the times of the Covid-19 pandemic. The film follows the life of a married couple who are on the verge of divorce. The two have to stay together during the Covid-19 lockdown as a nasty surprise awaits them.
8. Beastars Season 2 – Netflix (July 15)
Beastars is an anime series set in a world where beasts of all kinds coexist. A gentle wolf awakens to his own predatory urges as his school deals with a murder within its midst, says the official synopsis.
9. Kudi Yedamaithe – Aha Video (July 16)
Kudi Yedamaithe features actor Amala Paul as a police officer and Rahul Vijay as a delivery agent working for a company called Repeat. The two find themselves caught in a series of repetitive events and they need to find their way out of the loop.
