Karungaapiyam, the upcoming Tamil horror film written and directed by Deekay, is a mixture of several subgenres of horror, said the filmmaker in a conversation with Silverscreen India.
The film features a star cast that includes actors Kajal Aggarwal, Raiza Wilson, Regina Cassandra, Janani, Yogi Babu, and Kalaiyarasan. The first look poster of the film, produced by Pave Entertainments and Vetri Vel Talkies, was released on social media on Friday.
Speaking about Karungaapiyam, Deekay said, “I will not say it is a different horror film, but it will have an interesting mixture of the various subgenres of horror, including horror-comedy, emotional horror, spine-chilling horror, and tragedy. I have put them all together and compiled them as one film.”
The script was written during the Covid-19 induced lockdown in 2020 and the film has a non-linear screenplay with episodic narration, the director added.
He further said that the stories are driven by the women characters, each one of whom has their own scenario. “Kajal Aggarwal’s story takes place in a periodic setting, while the others are set in different modern times. Each female character has her own unique mannerisms. For example, Regina’s character has the power of memory and will be a book-reader, while Janani’s has a fetish for something and Raiza will appear in a grey shade. And, as the title suggests, there will be a book called Black Novel that will interweave the stories of the women.”
Karungaapiyam, which was shot in mid-2020 in Chennai and Pollachi, is currently in the post-production stages, with the VFX work and re-recording in process. The film features no songs and has a background score composed by Prasad SN.

The makers are yet to decide on the date and mode of Karungaapiyam’s release.
Meanwhile, talking about his other upcoming horror film, Katteri, which was originally scheduled to hit theatres on December 25, but got postponed in the wake of the second wave of Covid-19, Deekay said, “It is a fairy-tale type of a film with a trippy feel. It will probably be a theatrical release, but it is up to the producers (Studio Green) to decide on the release.”
