Suriya, the Tamil actor, has sorted out the plagiarism case filed against his latest production Raame Aandalum Raavane Aandalum by paying an undisclosed amount as compensation to the complainant, ETimes reported.
The film, which marked the directorial debut of Arisil Moorthy, is the 10th project of Suriya’s 2D Entertainment. Starring Ramya Pandian, Vani Bhojan, and Mithun Manickam in the lead roles and produced by Suriya and Jyotika, Raame Aandalum Raavane Aandalum is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
Skipping theatrical release, the Tamil drama film premiered digitally on the platform in September. It reportedly landed in trouble after its release when a plagiarism case was filed against the director.
The film is said to be an adaptation of the 2016 Marathi film Ranga Patangaa, which is currently streaming on Disney+ Hotstar. The Marathi film revolves around a man’s quest for his stolen oxen and how he lands up in a media circus during the process.
The synopsis of Raame Aandalum Raavane Aandalum (RARA) on Amazon Prime Video says the film “talks about a village which is breaking news in all television channels in India, but the people of the village don’t have electricity to watch television.”
However, press releases had earlier said the plot also deals with the protagonist Kunnimuthu, a 35-year-old innocent farmer who loses his beloved bulls, Karuppan and Vellaiyan, and meets a reporter who helps him.
In an earlier conversation with Silverscreen India, the director had said, “The protagonist is inspired by a neighbour in my village from my childhood. He used to interact a lot with animals and converse with them as though they were humans. That character stayed on in my mind and I entwined it with the current political scenario for the film.”

According to the ETimes report, the Marathi film’s remake rights were already owned by some others in the Tamil film industry. The report further states that Moorthy, who had thought of obtaining the remake rights of the Marathi film, later dropped the plan since Raame Aandalum Raavane Aandalum is an extended version of Ranga Patangaa.
When Suriya learned about the story adaptation, he reportedly paid a compensation amount to those who owned the Tamil remake rights of the Marathi film and settled the matter.
There has been no official statement from Suriya or the production house on the issue.
Meanwhile, the second of 2D Entertainment’s four-film deal with Amazon Prime Video, Udanpirappe, starring Jyotika, Sasikumar, and Samuthirakani, premiered on the platform on Thursday.
