Written and directed U Anbarasan, who previously helmed the crime action movie Walter (2020), Rekla is produced by Ambeth Kumar under the Olympia Movies banner.

Speaking to Silverscreen India about his sophomore project, director Anbarasan says, “It is a family entertainer combined with crime drama and can be called a commercial crime thriller. The film is set in a town in contemporary times. It involves an achievement that is attained by the protagonist despite him being past the age limit for it and is about how he uses it to sort out a particular problem.”

The director reveals that Prabhu Deva will play “two roles” in the film but clarifies that it is not a double-action script. “There will be a changeover and his character will have two appearances. One character will transform into another. The film is titled Rekla after the rekla race. Bulls know whom to show affection towards and whom to be aggressive with. The protagonist is similar to that.”

Anbarasan wrote the script of Rekla after Walter and Prabhu Deva was his first choice for the lead. The rest of the cast and crew will be announced shortly, the director says, adding that there will be some known faces. “We are in the process of finalising the cast and will make an announcement in a week or so.”

The film is currently in the pre-production stages with set work in progress. Rekla will go on floors in March and will be shot in Chennai, Pudukottai, and Madurai, in addition to Goa or Mumbai.

Ghibran is the music director and composing for the film has already begun. “There will be about three or four songs in the film and most of them will be dance numbers since Prabhu Deva is there,” the director adds.
