Police said the men hurled a bottle full of fuel, also known as a Molotov cocktail or petrol bomb, at the theatre premises and sped away at around 5 am on Thursday. The incident took place shortly before the first screening of Ajith’s latest film began at the cinema hall. The bottle landed in the two-wheeler parking area of the theatre complex, and according to the police, one two-wheeler was slightly damaged as a result. There were no casualties or other injuries reported due to the incident.

A probe has been initiated by the Coimbatore police to identify the miscreants.

Valimai, starring Ajith Kumar in the lead role, is an action drama written and directed by filmmaker H Vinoth. The film also stars Huma S Qureshi, Karthikeya, Bani, Sumithra, Achyunth Kumar, Yogi Babu, Raj Ayyappa, and Pugazh.

One of the most awaited projects in Ajith’s career, Valimai garnered massive attention over the course of its long gestation period, with the actor’s fans constantly asking for updates on the film, which was first announced in 2019.

After facing multiple delays during production, the film backed by  Boney Kapoor under his Bayview Projects banner in association with Zee Studios, finally released in theatres on Thursday.

Ajith’s fans went all out during the FDFS (first day, first show) screenings of the film. As is common among certain sections of fans, cut-outs of the actor were anointed with packets of milk in celebration. And in one instance, Kapoor’s car, which was parked at a theatre premise in Chennai, was anointed with curd instead of milk.

Ahead of its release, Valimai witnessed worldwide pre-booking business of approximately Rs 96 crore. With that, it bested the record previously set by the actor’s Vivegam to become the film with the best pre-release numbers in Ajith’s career.
