A part of AVM Studios, the building that symbolized Tamil Cinema since 1949, is being demolished to give way to a multi-storey apartment complex. Sources say that a piece of land across from the construction area has been bought to accommodate vehicles.
Spread over 25 acres in Vadapalani, the hub of Chennai’s film district, AVM studios has seen innumerable films and television serials shot in it since 1949. In an area where there used to be about 15 different film studios, only AVM and Prasad Studios remain.
AVM Studios is jointly owned by brothers AVM Saravanan and AVM Balasubramanian. Sources say that the portion owned by the latter is being demolished. According to reports in the Tamil daily Dinamalar, the ‘bus stop’ set and an air-conditioned shooting floor are being brought down. Now, only 4 floors will be available for film and television shoots
A decrease in revenues due to more films being shot on location is the primary reason behind this move.
