The latest addition to the cast of Telugu film Bhagmati is Mollywood actress Asha Sarath. This marks the Telugu debit of the actress who is known for her roles in Malayalam film Drishyam and Tamil films like Papanasam and Thoongavanam.
Bhagmati, directed by G Ashok, also has other prominent Malayalam stars like Jayaram and Unni Mukundan. The movie has actress Anushka Shetty playing the lead.
According to a Mathrubhumi report, a source from the unit has said that Asha would be playing the role of a CBI officer named Vaishnavi Reddy in Bhagmati. Initially, Bollywood actress Tabu was considered for the role, but she could not be accommodated because of date issues.
Bhagmati is a period movie which chronicles the life of Bhagmati, the Hindu wife of Golconda region’s Muslim ruler Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah. Legend has it that Bhagmati (a dancer) changed her name to Hyder Mahal following her wedding with the Sultan, and that the city of Hyderabad is derived from her name.

This marks Anushka’s fourth outing in a period movie, after Arundathi, Rudhramadevi and Baahubali. “Anushka has become the favourite of banners which want to produce period movies. She set the mark through Arundhati. Now, there is no one to challenge her position. It was just natural that the producers picked her for Bhagmati,” said S Priya, a top casting agent from Hyderabad.
Recently, Anushka’s movie, Rudhramadevi was recommended by the Film Federation of India as the country’s official submission for the Oscar awards.
