Srikanth Disappointed With Nambiyaar’s U/A Certificate

Actor Srikanth, whose film  Nambiyaar releases today, expressed his disappointment over the film being given a ‘U/A’ certificate. Srikanth says he feels ‘betrayed’ over the certificate, as his film is a ‘clean entertainer’. “I feel betrayed, especially when I see other films with violence and skin show getting away with a U certificate. The addition of an A means so many minuses for me. I can’t apply for tax exemption… I don’t understand how this system works,” he said, in an interview with The Hindu.

Nambiyaar marks Srikanth’s debut as a film producer. The actor, who plans on producing more films, found the  experience educational. “Production is a whole new ball game. And, it was educative. But, I realised that the biggest hurdle of all is finding a release date and working towards it,” he said.

The film, he claims, is a two-hour film with several jokes infused for entertainment, “I’m very happy with what we’ve created. I will not say this is a ‘different; film, but what I liked most was how fresh it felt.”

Since July 2011, stricter norms on entertainment tax have come into force. According to this, only films which are given the ‘U’ certificate by the Central Board of Film Certification will be eligible for tax exemption. In addition to allowing anybody of any age to watch the film, the ‘U’ certificate also ensures a 30 per cent tax exemption. In a bid to secure the U certificate, directors choose to re-edit their films, taking away any content that may be deemed objectionable by the CBFC.

Nambiyaar stars Srikanth, N Santhanam, and Sunaina, written and directed by debutant Ganeshaa, a former associate of director SS Rajamouli. Arya has a guest role in this film.

Nambiyaar‘s audio was launched on July 2014. The album, composed by Vijay Antony, marks the singing debut of Actor Santhanam.
