Former Disney star and singer Miley Cyrus, in a recent interview with Elle Magazine, vowed that she would never walk the red carpet again. “[A year ago] I had to do the [A Very Murray Christmas] premiere, and I will never do a red carpet again. Why, when people are starving, am I on a carpet that’s red? Because I’m ‘important’? Because I’m ‘famous’? That’s not how I roll. It’s like a skit-it’s like Zoolander,” Cyrus said.
She went on to further elaborate her decision on The Today Show with hosts Carson Daly and Savannah Guthrie.
“[As] women, we get yelled at to blow them a kiss, and I don’t feel like blowing you a kiss. Like what is going on? Who are you? And then you’re just kind of putting yourself out there for people to talk. I don’t want people to talk about what I’m wearing. That’s usually why I don’t wear too much,” she said.
Miley’s campaign against red carpet sexism resonates with last year’s revolt against E! Online‘s “fun” red carpet game ‘Mani Cam‘. The Mani Cam consists of a diorama in which actresses show off their fingers down a mini-red carpet, displaying their shades of nail polish and jewelry.

When it first debuted at the 2012 Emmy Awards, most women were confused. However, in 2015’s SAG Awards, a mini-revolt had begun: A series of nominated actresses flat-out refused to walk their fingers down the “mani-cam red carpet”.
Similarly,in the same year, host of various award show – Ryan Seacrest – came under fire for the lack of substantial interview questions for actresses. Ahead of the 2015 Oscars, a social media campaign called #AskHerMore demanded that the pre-show coverage shift from designer dresses and beauty routines to the work and careers of the nominated actresses.

This year, singer Alicia Keys, too, refused to give in to achieving high beauty standards, and started a No-Makeup movement. She has been making appearances sans makeup, debuting in this year’s MTV VMAs. The singer wrote a heartfelt essay titled ‘Time To Uncover‘, to urge women to embrace their skins and not falling into the trap of socially-constructed beauty goals.
Cyrus, however, has never shied away from calling out blatant sexism. She recently slammed US Presidential candidate Donald Trump for his sexism. The singer accused the candidate of saying “stupid-a** sexist sh*t” after Trump retweeted side-by-side images of his wife Melania and the wife of his political rival Ted Cruz.
