The proposal for honouring actor/politician NT Rama Rao with the Bharat Ratna has finally reached Prime Minister Narendra Modi, reports The Times of India. According to the report, Union minister of State for Home Affairs, Kiren Rijiju said that the PMO will look into the issue.
Telugu Desam Party (TDP), which was founded by NTR, had sent a letter to the PMO, appealing for a Bharat Ratna for their founder and former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh who passed away in 1996. The TDP, a partner in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government, unanimously passed a resolution on the second day of its ‘Mahanadu’ or the annual conclave in the coastal city of Visakhapatnam.

The resolution was passed on the birth anniversary of NTR, who had launched the TDP in 1982. He created a record of sorts by coming to power within nine months of forming the new party, ending the single-party rule of the Congress in the undivided Andhra Pradesh of that period.
Current CM Chandrababu Naidu made a similar appeal to confer the honour on Rao. “NTR deserved the award for his contribution towards cinema and politics as he enjoyed unparalleled popularity in both in streams,” he said.
