Madras High Court Quashes 2009 Defamation Case Against Suriya, Vivek & Others

The Madras High Court has quashed a 2009 defamation case against actors Suriya, Sathyaraj, Sarathkumar, Sripriya, Vijayakumar, Vivek, Arun Vijay and Cheran, over remarks made against the magazine Dinamalar. Justice M V Muralidharan ruled that no purpose would be served by continuing the prosecution, and referred to similar cases that had been dropped in the past.

Earlier in May, non-bailable warrants had been issued against the actors for failing to show up at a court hearing. 

In 2009, actress Bhuvaneshwari was arrested on prostitution charges by the Tamil Nadu police. Reportedly, she had revealed names of other Tamil actresses involved in the prostitution ring. Several news agencies carried detailed reports of this incident, which irked the Tamil film industry.

Subsequently, on October 7, 2009, the Nadigar Sangam organised a meeting in protest, during which the eight actors made derogatory statements against journalists. Following this, senior correspondent Rozario Mariya Susai filed a private complaint against them.
