Actresses across the world have been fighting for equal pay. While the male actors command huge pay packets, their female counterparts are not offered the same privilege. But Bollywood actor Taapsee Pannu’s latest statement will definitely not come as good news for the advocates of gender equality.
Pannu says that though there is a pay gap, it would be unfair to demand equal pay especially when the actors’ movies generate higher box-office numbers. Speaking to PTI News, about how movies like Queen and Mary Kom are still a rarity in Bollywood, Pannu said:
“How many movies like these do you actually come across in a year? Probably one or two maximum. It’s unfair to ask for an equal pay when you’re not getting an equal amount of opening collection. The day the audience walks in the theatre and sees a female protagonist’s film, gives us the same amount of bumper opening of Rs 10-15 crores, that day I will say we need to be paid equally.”

Elaborating further on numbers, the actress said that no matter how good a film is, her male counterparts end up with better numbers.
“Right now it’s unfair for producers to give us an equal amount of money because no matter how good the film is, like mine was this year’s biggest opener for a female protagonist film, but if you compare it with other male protagonist, they get far higher (opening).”
Last seen in Naam Shabana, the 30-year-old actress has Judwaa 2 and Tadka in the pipeline.
