When one thinks of Indian horror films in the 80s and early 90s, the names that crop up are the pioneers of the genre – the Ramsay Brothers. Gore, soft porn, vampires, zombies, cheap make-up, and a whole lot of blood-curdling screams, the Ramsay Brothers movies have become cult classics.
Cut to 2018, almost 30 years later, and the gore, supernatural, moans (yes, lots of them), and cheesy dialogues are somewhat back thanks to stand up comic Varun Thakur. Amazon Prime India, that recently showcased Laakhon Mein Ek (by Biswa Kalyan Rath) and Pushpavalli (by Sumukhi Suresh), now brings us a tribute to horror films from a bygone era.

Shaitaan Haveli is about a film’s team with a limited budget who are all set to make a movie that has chudails (witch), vampires, zombies and bhoot-prets (ghosts). Soon enough, the team are unable to distinguish between the real monsters and the fake ones. But, as they say, the show must go on. And they continue shooting with the real ones.
The film is a tribute to Ramsay Brothers film titled Purani Haveli that released in 1989. The film is about a monster who goes on a rampage killing people until it is finally killed thanks to some timely divine intervention.
The show stars Thakur as the hero of the film. All the episodes will be available for streaming on Prime Video from January 5.
