S Janaki Refutes Rumours Of Ill-Health

Pay's Homage to MS Viswanathan

Singer S Janaki was recently rumoured to have had a heart attack. The news proved to be a hoax, but it did its damage. The singer was besieged with calls from worried relatives who feared the worst. Her assistant says that these rumours have caused a lot of distress in Janaki’s family. “Janakiamma is also very upset. You cannot imagine how it feels when people spread false news about your health. This is very wrong,” he added.

Speaking to Silverscreen, Janaki issued a stern request to gossipmongers. “Stories like these are hateful and only spread ill will. I request everybody to follow their hearts and only do what is right. In this age where popularity is everything, it is imperative that we stand our ground and stay true to our core moral values. Please do not kill anybody with your stories.”

This is the second time that Janaki has been the target of such rumours. In 2016, when similar news went viral, her co-singer SP Balasubrahmanyam took to social media to refute the rumours.

The 78-year-old singer has sung more than 48,000 songs across languages, and won four National Awards and 32 State Film Awards. A native of Pallapatla village, Guntur, Janaki began her singing career in 1957 with the Tamil movie, Vidhiyin Vilayattu. In the ’60s and ’70s, she worked with the finest musicians of the country. Her songs with Ilaiyaraaja and duets with SP Balasubramanyam became instant hits and are still immensely popular.
S Janaki had refused the Padma Bhushan in 2013 saying that it had come “a little too late”. Aalpanathile Thenum Vayambum, a book about her life and music was written by the poet and critic Abhilash Pudukad and published last year.
