Nayanthara’s CoCo Trailer Tells Us Just Enough To Want More

The trailer of Kolamaavu Kokila is out and Nayanthara looks like she’s setting us up for some real drama. Her first major film after last year’s Aramm, which received critical acclaim and was a box-office hit, CoCo, as it seems to affectionately subtited in the trailer, began shooting last year and is yet to find a release date.

The tone and colour of visuals in the trailer hint to the film being a bit offbeat — muted colours, and none of the usual candy glamour that is a hallmark of mainstream cinema. But the small bursts of humour and repartee between the characters tell you that CoCo has not walked too far from the beaten path. The cast includes the immensely talented Saranya Ponvannan, Yogi Babu and Rajendran, apart from others.

A quick look at the trailer, while one is awed at how convincing Nayanthara looks like a college girl, you can tell this is a drug heist story. When the drug dealers talk money, you suddenly link it to the title of the film and it hits you — ah! Once that clicks into place, it’s pretty easy to tell that this is a story of a family from a strained background whose lives take a turn because of a strange set of circumstances.

The juxtaposition of the music, the circumstances and the subject of the film gives you the impression of it being a black comedy. Just before the trailer ends, you are shown that Nayanthara’s character is called Kokila. Along with that reveal are compelling shots of Nayanthara taking to arms, but with great pain and hesitation. The idea of the story falls into place here and you can’t help but root for Kokila who is about to become something … big.

Directed by Nelson Dhilipkumar, Anirudh Ravichander has composed the music. The film had earlier released a few posters and two singles. One was ‘Edhuvaraiyo’, which had a voiceover from director Gautham Menon.

The other one, Kalyana Vasayu, failed to make a mark apart from being part of a plagiarism controversy, but the video featuring Babu and Nayanthara is quite fun. The song is a typical one of a man in love, except that this is Babu’s version, so you know what to expect. The song has clocked 30 million views on YouTube so far.
