Adanga Maru, which released on December 21 starring Jayam Ravi and Raashi Khanna in the lead, is an intense cop drama which contains a scene involving lawyers. The complaint filed at the Madras High Court demands the removal of the scene from the film. The court has since adjourned the hearing of the case to the second week of January.

Speaking to Silverscreen, director Karthik Thangavel said, “That was not a scene actually; it was just a humorous dialogue. We did not mean to offend anyone with that, and moreover, we didn’t expect it to create a problem. Also, we had a different dialogue in place while scripting, but the one that eventually made its way to the final cut was something improvised on the spot.” Thangavel added that the complainant did not contact them, or express their discomfort about the scene directly to the team. “If they had deemed it offensive, they could have told us and we would have done what we could. But they directly approached the court; which is fine, we will do whatever the court says.”

Earlier last month, AR Murugadoss’s Sarkar faced a similar issue when cadres and politicians of AIADMK, the ruling party of Tamil Nadu, indulged in violence demanding the removal of scenes which criticised the freebies given by the government.

Thangavel added, “These incidents happen only for the sake of publicity. But it affects the freedom of expression of a writer or director as they are restricted from telling or expressing what they feel. Also, they can’t demand the film to be re-censored and ask us to remove scenes as even the censor board doesn’t have the right to do so.”

Adanga Maru is produced by Sujatha Vijayakumar and Anand (Jayam Ravi’s brother-in-law) for Home Movie Makers. The film also stars Sampath, Mime Gopi and Azhagam Perumal in pivotal roles. Sam CS has scored the music, and the film opened to good reviews.
