Aamir Khan’s Thugs Of Hindostan has opened to a slow start in China by making Rs 10 crore on its opening day. Following the film’s failure in India, the makers had their hopes pinned on China. It released in China on December 29.
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh said in his tweet that Thugs of Hindostan opened to a slow start despite the immense goodwill enjoyed by Khan in the country. His last two releases – Secret Superstar and Dangal did exceedingly well, with the former even surpassing collections made by The Black Panther. However, Adarsh also said that the movie was safe only because of the upfront amount received from local distributors.

Directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya of Dhoom 3 fame, Thugs of Hindostan, which marked the coming together of Aamir Khan and Amitabh Bachchan was one of the costliest movies made in Bollywood this year. After its release, it collected Rs. 50 crores and went onto become the biggest opener in the country. However, the negative word of mouth in the subsequent days led to the movie’s failure.
Khan, who acknowledged the failure of the movie said in an interview that he would like to take responsibility for it. “I think we went wrong. I would like to take full responsibility for that. You can be sure we tried our level best,” he said.
The actor then apologised to the audience whose expectations could not be met. When asked about the reason for the film’s failure, he said, “I am not very comfortable talking about these things in public. My film is like my child. So failure is also mine.”
While Indian films have enjoyed huge success in China, recently released movies have been receiving a lukewarm response. 102 Not Out, which released in China early this month, didn’t do well at the their box office. Akshay Kumar’s Padman which released in the country on December 14, also opened lower than this previous release, Toilet – Ek Prem Katha.
