Today is Malaysia Vasudevan’s death anniversary. As a tribute, our song of the day is an all time favourite Ilaiyaraaja composition sung by him and S Janaki for the 1985 film Muthal Mariyathai. In his career spanning three decades Vasudevan sang close to 8,000 songs, most of them for Ilaiyaraaja with whom he began his career and who backed him till he became a star singer.
In 1976 and 1977 he sang for Ilaiyaraaja’s films Annakili and 16 Vayathinile, and there was no looking back after that. ‘Indha Minminikku’, ‘Ezhudhugiral Oru Pudhukkavithai’, ‘Pothuvaga En Manasu’ ‘Aasai Nooru Vagai’, ‘Singamondru Purapattadhe’, ‘Agaya Ganagi’ are some of his super hits. He has also worked with MS Viswanathan, Shankar Ganesh and AR Rahman. He has acted in over 85 Tamil films.
In ‘Poongatru Thirumbuma’, Sivaji Ganesan sings of his heavy heart and asks if the breeze will turn its course to listen to and like his song. Radha hears this and fondly asks “Raasaavae varuthamaa?” Both of them are driven to go looking for each other. During their search she tells him, look around there’s no one without this sadness. But the sky is vast, the sun is bright, and like a kuyil someone will come to your house to lighten your heart.
