Kalavani 2 will finally release after the Madras High Court lifted a ban on the film. This is a result of actor Vemal, the star of the film, reaching a compromise with producer Singaravelan who had asked for the ban on the film’s release.
Vemal met Singaravelan and signed an agreement saying he will work on two movies for the latter’s production house within 2019, in return for the money he had borrowed from the producer. Details about these films are yet to be announced.
Actor Vemal has stepped in months after the controversy between Singaravelan and the film’s director and producer Sargunam began. On April 22, Singaravelan had obtained a stay order on the Vemal and Oviya starrer, saying Vemal owed him Rs 4.32 crore which he had borrowed to complete his production and acting projects, including Rs 1 crore for Kalavani 2. They had signed an agreement that the money will be returned in six months, but Vemal never responded and the film’s trailers and promotional posters released without crediting Singaravelan’s production company.
Following this, director Sargunam released a video saying the film was produced solely by his company Varmans Production, and they did not have any dealings with Singaravelan. He said that his film was facing the brunt of an issue between Singaravelan and Vemal. He later moved court and the stay was lifted, however only he was allowed to release the film and not the six other parties involved.

Last week, Sargunam approached the Chennai Commissioner saying he was receiving death threats from Singaravelan’s side pressurising him to not release the film. Singaravelan’s party maintained that Sargunam was trying to brush his hands off the issue, and the money was borrowed to complete his film so he was involved. Singaravelan also filed a case of cheating of Rs 1.5 crore against Vemal alleging that he was promised the theatrical rights of Kalavani 2. Vemal, who was reportedly not in country, and was not available for comment, responded after the cheating case was filed.
Kalavani 2 is a sequel to the 2010 sleeper hit, which was Oviya’s debut, and starred Vimal, Oviya and Saranya Ponvannan in the lead. The film was announced back in 2016. It also faced issues when the director announced that he would be producing the film with the title K2, and the original producer Nasser objected saying he owned the rights.
The film was shelved temporarily, and shooting began with Vemal and Oviya once again in mid-2018.
