Suriya said yesterday that since Selvaraghavan’s first film Thulluvatho Ilamai in 2002 he had wanted to work the director. “It’s taken us almost 18 years to come together for a project,” he said. “NGK was a two-and-a-half year process. Selvaraghavan had three scripts with Dream Warrior Pictures, but this was the one that kept ringing for him. The character NGK is closest to his heart.”
For Suriya, playing NGK was one of the most challenging roles in his career. “Everyday of shoot I felt like I was entering a new film set. There was a surprise at every point. I consider the film a learning curve in my career.” He gave an example of an instance from the film when the people of a village are awaiting his return and are not sure if he’ll come back safe. “I knew how to emote and the limits I could push myself to. But Selvaraghavan’s direction brought out unexpected work from me. It added a lot of layers to my character. He can push an actor to perform, to make an impact in the audiences’ mind. I have always wanted to do a Selvaraghavan film.”

Suriya as NGK plays the role of a man from a middle class family who wants to enter politics. “The things that happen around him, and what he does to get to his destination forms the scenario. It was a complex character for me. Selvaraghavan sir would ask us not learn the dialogues or the script but just come to the sets with a fresh mind. Mostly, he would enact it out. It’s a treat to watch him act. I saw NGK through him and played my part.” Suriya also said the film is a commentary on society. “It’s Selvaraghavan’s take on things. It will definitely make us think and aware about what’s happening around.”
The film co-stars Sai Pallavi and Rakul Preet Singh in the lead. Music is composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja, cinematography is by Sivakumar Vijayan and editing by Praveen KL. The film is produced by SR Prabhu’s Dream Warrior Pictures.
Meanwhile, the actor will resume a 7-day shoot for Soorarai Potru with director Sudha Kongara next week. Asked about doing a film with Jyothika in the future, he said, “It’s been long since I shared screen space with Jo. Today, I heard the first half of a script for new film. Let’s see, things might work out. If we do agree to act together it has to be a very special film.”
