‘Indu Sarkar’ Team Receives Legal Notice From Woman Claiming To Be Sanjay Gandhi’s Daughter

A Gurgaon-based woman, Priya Paul Singh, who claims to be the daughter of the late Sanjay Gandhi, has sent a legal notice to director Bhandarkar, producer Bharat Shah, Venkaiah Naidu, Minister of Information & Broadcasting, and Pahlaj Nihalani, the chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), to stall the release of the film, Indu Sarkar.

In a four-page legal notice dated June 23, Paul said that she had come to know that her “father” Sanjay Gandhi and her grandmother Indira Gandhi (played by actors Neil Nitin Mukesh and Supriya Vinod in the film), are shown in roles “without accurate or sufficient historical data” and may be shown in “poor light”. She asked for the release of the film to be stopped until she can see for herself if the reports were true. Paul also said that the CBFC should allow the film to release only if she gives it the go-ahead.

Bhandarkar has refused to comment on the issue. CBFC Chief Pahlaj Nihalani, meanwhile, said:

“We had no idea Shri Sanjay Gandhi had another child besides Varun Gandhi. The notice says Ms Priya Paul Singh is his ‘biological child’. Unless the Gandhi parivaar acknowledges her claims, we can’t act on Ms Singh’s objections to the film.”

Bhandarkar’s film has also been slammed by the Congress party. Earlier, a spokesperson for the political outfit said that the project was sponsored by those who seek to tarnish the image of the INC.
