Sreenivasan, the veteran Malayalam actor, screenwriter and director, who was admitted to Apollo Adlux Hospital for bypass surgery, is said to be showing significant signs of recovery.
In a media bulletin issued on Tuesday, the hospital management stated that the actor has now been taken off ventilator support and all cardiac support. “He is able to communicate with family members and is in the recovering phase,” the statement added.
Sreenivasan was admitted to the hospital on March 30 after he developed heart-related ailments. Earlier, a hospital source told Silverscreen India that the 66-year-old actor was hospitalised for almost one week and that bypass surgery was performed on him after tests had revealed that Sreenivasan had three blocks in his blood vessels.
Post-surgery, he was put on ventilator support and since then his condition remained stable, the source had said, adding that the actor was responding well to the treatment and medication.
Sreenivasan was born in Patyam village in Kerala’s Kannur district on April 6, 1956. His mother was a homemaker and his father was a school teacher. After completing a bachelor’s course in economics from PRNSS college, he moved to Chennai in 1977 to study at the Film and Television Institute of Tamil Nadu.
He made his acting debut in Manimuzhakkam directed by PA Backer in 1976, and his first role as a protagonist came in 1979’s Sanghaganam.
His work as a scenarist began with Odaruthammava Aalariyam (1984). Some of his popular films as a writer include Sandesam, Mazhayethum Munpe, Gandhinagar 2nd Street and Thalayanamanthram, and Njan Prakashan.
His first film as a director was Vadakkunokkiyanthram (1989). It won the National Film Award for Best Film on Other Social Issues and the Kerala State Award for Best Popular Film. Sreenivasan is the recipient of three Kerala State Awards in all.

As a writer and actor, he has frequently collaborated with directors such as Priyadarshan, Sathyan Anthikad and Kamal. He last starred in Mohan Kumar Fans (2021) and will be seen in a handful of upcoming films like Makal, Keedam, and Pyali.
Sreenivasan is married to Vimala, a retired teacher, and both of his sons – Vineeth Sreenivasan and Dhyan Sreenivasan – are filmmakers and actors.
