Anil Nedumangad, the Malayalam actor who appeared in Ayyappanum Koshiyum and Kammattipadam, died in a drowning accident in the Malankara Dam in Thodupuzha, Kerala on Friday. He was 48.
According to a Mathrubumi report, Anil was in Thodupuzha to shoot the film Peace, starring Joju George. Anil, along with a few friends, went to the dam to bathe. However, he was pulled by strong currents after he swam into deeper water.
According to the report, at around 6 pm, Anil’s friends realised he was missing and tried to rescue him. He was finally taken to a private hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.
Anil started his career as a television producer and anchor, and worked in several Malayalam television channels before making his film debut in 2014 with the Malayalam film Njan Steve Lopez. He went on to act in several films, including Porinju Mariam Jose, Parole and Pavada.
After news of his death broke, many Malayalam film personalities posted their condolences on social media. These included actor Prithviraj Sukumaran, who had worked with him in Ayyappanum Koshiyum, actor Dulquer Salmaan, who had worked with him in Kammattipadam, and Mammootty, who worked with him in Parole.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala also paid their respects. Vijayan wrote, “He was a genius who made his mark in the world of cinema with notable roles. In a short period of time, through his acting prowess, he was able to bring to life characters that touched the audience deeply. Anil’s untimely demise is a great loss to the world of Malayalam film. I share in the grief of his family and friends.”
The tragedy comes close on the heels of the death of Malayalam director and screenwriter Naranipuzha Shanavas died from cardiogenic shock in Kochi on December 23.
Anil last appeared in the Malayalam film Paapam Cheyyathavar Kalleriyatte, which released in February.
