In the application, Kohli’s former girlfriend Neeru Randhawa had also sought contempt action against the actor.

On June 3, 2018, the Mumbai Police had registered an FIR against Kohli under IPC sections 323 (hurt), 326 (grievous hurt), 504 and 506 (criminal intimidation) after Randhawa accused him of assault. She allegedly required 15 stitches on her head following the incident. The actor was subsequently arrested.

Shortly after his arrest, Kohli paid an amount of Rs 50 lakh to Randhawa and moved the High Court to quash the FIR against him. His brother had also issued two other post-dated cheques to her, amounting to Rs 50 lakh, on Kohli’s behalf. The FIR was then quashed on June 15, 2018 with Randhawa’s consent.

At the time, the court had also taken an undertaking from the actor that he regretted his actions and would not repeat such behaviour in the future.

However, both the post-dated cheques had bounced and therefore, Randhawa moved the High Court that same year seeking to restore the FIR. She also sought contempt action against the actor as well as his brother for issuing the cheques.

During the hearing of the case earlier this month, Randhawa’s counsel, Kushal Mor, informed the court that Kohli was now in prison in connection with a drugs case while his brother, who was bed-ridden, had passed away.

The court then issued a fresh notice to Kohli and also permitted Randhawa to physically serve him at the Mumbai Central Prison, where he is currently lodged.

However, the court turned down Randhawa’s request for contempt action against Kohli citing that a remedy via a separate contempt petition was available to her.

Kohli is currently in jail after being arrested as part of the drug probe that was initiated after actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s death. He was booked on August 28, 2021 under several sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substance Act (NDPS Act) by the Narcotics Control Board (NCB) after they seized cocaine from his Mumbai residence.
