Britney Spears, the American pop singer, announced her engagement to long-term partner Sam Asghari on Sunday through social media. The news of her engagement to the model and fitness trainer comes just days after her father filed a petition to end the 13-year long conservatorship through which he controlled both the singer’s personal and professional life.
Spears took to Instagram and shared a video showing off her engagement ring. The video also featured Asghari, who shared a close-up photo of the ring with the two of them in the background on his Instagram page.
Asghari also expressed his gratitude for the well wishes that poured in via an Instagram Story. “My phone exploded! Thank you for the overwhelming love and congratulations. We both love every single one of you,” he wrote.
“Thank you everyone who is concerned about the prenup. Of course we’re getting [an] iron clad prenup to protect my jeep and shoe collection in case she dumps me one day,” he added.
Spears has been in a conservatorship under her father since 2008, which the 39-year-old singer has termed “abusive.” She entered into the conservatorship or guardianship with her father following several public meltdowns. It gave him control over her financial affairs, estate, and her personal life.
During a hearing in June, in a 24-minute testimony to the court, Spears had spoken about how the conservatorship did not allow her to get married or have a baby.

“I would like to progressively move forward and I want to have the real deal, I want to be able to get married and have a baby. I was told right now in the conservatorship, I’m not able to get married or have a baby,” she had said.
Spears also mentioned that she had an Intrauterine Device (IUD) to prevent pregnancy, which she wanted to take out but was not allowed to.
After opposing all her attempts to remove him from the conservatorship, the singer’s father Jamie Spears filed a petition to end the conservatorship in a surprise move on Tuesday.
