American television personality Chrissy Teigen and her husband singer-songwriter John Legend drew criticism for hosting an elaborate Squid Game-themed party last week.
The couple hosted the now-infamous party at their home and it was attended by actors like Shay Mitchell and Jesse Tyler Ferguson.
Squid Game is a popular Korean drama show about a large group of poor people who compete against each other in deadly games to win 45.6 billion dollars.
True to the theme and setting of Squid Game, the event had bunk beds, large piggy banks stuffed with money, and Teigen dressed up as the gigantic robot doll that features in the first episode of the series. Even the wait staff were dressed up as the guards from the show donning masks and orange jumpsuits.
Teigen took to her Instagram page and shared pictures from the party. “What an absolutely epic night. My dream came true of watching my friends fight to the death! Dunk tank, musical chairs, hide and seek followed by a very riveting final game of pin the tail on the donkey,” she wrote.
Her post drew instant backlash from social media users who pointed out that she had completely missed the point of the show. Criticising her for being insensitive and tone-deaf, they pointed out that the show represents the cruelty of capitalism.
The company which was organised the event, Wife of Party, was also called out for planning it.
Taking personal offense at the complete lack of self awareness Chrissy Teigen must have in order to throw a Squid Game-themed party where she watches her rich friends 'fight to the death'. The commentary just writes itself…

Similarly, Indian television actor Karanvir Bohra too was slammed on social media for throwing a birthday party based on the show for his daughters, as per a report in The Indian Express.
This is not the first time that Teigen has faced backlash for her actions in recent times. Earlier this year, she was heavily criticised for telling a model named Courtney Stodden to “kill herself.” Stodden, who was only 16 at the time, claimed that Teigen had bullied her several times on Twitter. In light of this issue, Teigen was forced to step down as narrator for season two of Never Have I Ever. She also issued a public apology for her behaviour.
