SA Chandrasekhar Confirms Dissolution of Vijay Makkal Iyakkam after Actor Sues to Restrain Use of His Name

SA Chandrasekhar, father of Tamil actor Vijay and veteran filmmaker, told a Chennai court on Monday that Vijay Makkal Iyakkam, the political body founded by him in his son’s name, has been dissolved.

As per an India Today report, Chandrasekhar submitted an affidavit to the Chennai City Civil Court stating that the resolution to dissolve the organisation with “immediate effect” was taken at a general body meeting convened on February 28.

Chandrasekhar’s affidavit was filed in response to Vijay’s recent civil suit against 11 people, including his father SAC and mother Shoba Chandrasekhar, which sought to restrain them from holding any meetings or activities in his name.

The civil suit came at the time when Vijay Makkal Iyakkam, registered by his father, had reportedly announced that its members would be contesting in the local body polls to be held in October in certain districts of Tamil Nadu. Vijay’s counsel submitted that it was the actor’s parents who had given permission for the members of the organisation to contest in elections as independent candidates. Apart from his parents, the actor also named people who were office-bearers in the organisation as respondents in the suit.

“Vijay Makkal Iyakkam has been dissolved, it is not in existence now. We are no longer members of Vijay Makkal Iyakkam, but we all continue as general fans of film actor Vijay,” Chandrasekhar said on Monday. He further added that the other respondents in the case have also tendered their resignations.

The next hearing of the case has been set for October 29.

This is not the first time Vijay has distanced himself from the political steps that his parents have taken. In November 2020, legal representatives of Chandrasekhar submitted an application to the Election Commission of India to register Vijay’s fan club as a political party called All India Thalapathy Vijay Makkal Iyakkam. However, Vijay immediately issued a statement that he was in no way involved in it. He had also warned that action would be taken against anyone who engaged in any political activities using his name, photo, or the name of Vijay Makkal Iyakkam.

Following this, Chandrasekhar wrote to the Election Commission withdrawing the application to register the fan club as a political party.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, Chandrasekhar shared a video on Twitter to issue a clarification about an alleged misunderstanding between Vijay and his parents that was published as part of an interview with the filmmaker in a Tamil daily. He described the article as claiming that he and his wife had gone to meet Vijay, but only Shoba was asked to come in, due to which the couple left the premises without meeting their son. The filmmaker said this was false. “It is true that Vijay and I have a problem today, but he and his mother (my wife), are in touch as usual. They do not have any misunderstanding. Any news to the contrary is false,” he added.

On the work front, Vijay is currently shooting in New Delhi for his upcoming film Beast, directed by filmmaker Nelson Dilipkumar. The actor will next collaborate with Telugu director Vamshi Paidapally for a pan-Indian film, tentatively called Thalapathy 66, which was confirmed recently by the filmmaker.
