Silverscreen goes to the Puthiya Thalaimurai Thamizhan Awards
Attending Puthiya Thalaimurai’s Thamizhan Awards was like going to a friend’s wedding. There were no LBDs in sight, as is the norm with these ceremonies. Instead, we were pleasantly surprised to see a bevy of women clad in beautiful kanjivarams, their hair coiffed with kunjalams, strings of malli poo neatly wound in between. The men too, were flaunting their pattu chattai and veshtis while little girls skipped about in lovely pavadais. It was like attending a wedding, indeed. One that was dotted with some celebrity appearances.
This year, Puthiya Thalaimurai honoured 12 achievers (many unsung heroes) from all walks of life. From cinema to science, veterans and young contributors alike were conferred with the ‘Sadhanai Thamizhan’ award. Composer MS Viswanathan, director Bharathiraja, lyricist Madhan Karky and director Vasanth were seen from the film industry, and while we were busy guessing the winner, the emcee invited Bharathiraja on-stage to present the ‘Sadhanai Thamizhan’ award to MSV. Heaping laurels on the legendary composer, Bharathiraja said, “although Ilaiyaraaja arrived a long time ago, only MSV’s songs are still played in villages. By handing over this award to him, I feel like honouring my own grand father. I hope I work with him soon.” A visibly elated MS Viswanathan then said, “there are lot of things that I can learn from the current generation. I have got a lot to do with music still.”Lyricist and poet Vairamuthu bagged the award too, and a dapper-looking Madhan Karky collected it on behalf of his father, who is currently recovering from a surgery.
