When one thinks of Christmas and films, there are always two that come to mind – Home Alone and Love Actually. One is a fairly traumatic story of a boy who gets left behind and the other features interconnected stories of different people. Since Christmas films are fairly passe, how about a few non-Christmasy films this holiday season?

Right from the Harvey Weinstein scandal to the whole effect trickling down across various fields, women are clearly done with patriarchy and those who have long oppressed them. In honour of all those women who stood up against their harassers, Charlie’s Angels is the perfect concoction of fun, kick-assery, and much-needed girl power where all three women always have each other’s backs. They’re pretty, sassy, but don’t take them too lightly.
No Country For Old Men
The ultimate crime-thriller ever, No Country For Old Men is gritty albeit slow. There’s never a dull moment when you have a plot that gets so sinister without ever knowing what each of the characters’ next move is. Directed by the Coen Brothers, the same ones who gave us The Big Lebowski, the film makes for a perfect night with popcorn and good company.

There’s romance, drama, comedy, music – the recipe for a perfect family evening by the Christmas tree. Ultimately, as the tagline goes, ‘it’s all about loving your parents’. So get teary-eyed (or not) and indulge in some family time with this classic Karan Johar film.

Millennials will never know what an experience it was to watch a 3D film in the 90s. Especially since this happened to be the first ever one from India. The story is so heartwarmingly cute with little children at the forefront teaching everyone a lesson or two about friendship. Stranger Things might have Eleven and the boys, but let’s get real. The first ever cool friends group had a little ghost called Kuttichathan.

The movie that almost won Best Film at the Oscars this year. A film that is set in modern times, yet has two characters who are from older worlds. The story of Sebastian (Ryan Gosling) and Mia (Emma Stone) is full of drama and passion for each other, and mostly for the profession they belong in. The film shows their growth from nothing to somewhere close to their ultimate goal. The melodrama is high, the love and humour are natural, and the songs are perhaps 2017’s biggest earworms.
