In Theatres This Friday: Masss, Iruvar Ondraanaal

Nearly a year after the debacle that was Anjaan, Suriya is back onscreen with Masss, a horror film aimed at children and the people responsible for their existence. As it is with Venkat Prabhu’s films, this one too has a kitschy feel to it – designed to attract and not much else. Duke bikes, gravity defying hair (a la Peter Hein) and yes, Premgi’s usual one-liners find pride of place in the trailer. It’s clear that Suriya wants this one to succeed, where Anjaan so obviously failed. Also in this attempt are Nayanthara, Pranitha, Samuthirakani and Parthiepan. The word ‘eclectic’ comes to mind.

All that aside, the film promises to be an amusing take on the horror films that are dime a dozen these days. There’s Suriya walking on walls, in odd Edwardian era outfits, sporting a striking set of fangs and not much else. A Tamil version of Twilight, this might not be, but it might well be the summer blockbuster that everybody’s hoping it will be.

Masss as a title was pretty awesome, giving way to many an amazing take on it. But, as it is with Tamil movies and the curious case of the entertainment tax, the admittedly cool title has given way to the less amazing Masss Engira Masilamani. For that U certificate though, we’re pretty sure, Venkat Prabhu and his team think all these sacrifices are quite worth it.

What it has

Nayanthara in the house, y’all!

Bikes, bhoothams and a lot of Bang Bang Bang. By which we mean guns, of course.

Suriya as Edward Cullen. Ok, we’re kidding.

What it doesn’t have

Real-life couples

It’s original title

Also on the cards is Iruvar Ondraanaal, starring a real-life couple. Contrary to what you’re thinking right now, this film does not chart their romance, but is based on an entirely different story. Prabhu and Krithika fall in and out of love over a matter of scenes and songs. While the former is your garden variety college dreamer sorts, Krithika, we’re told, is the kind of girl who’s often misunderstood. Ava romba emotional, her friend tells Prabhu. A little later, he informs us that ‘love is like an onion’. All this from a two-minute trailer. Imagine the words of wisdom you’ll get if you actually watch it in theatres.

Directed by Anbu G and produced by AM Sampath Kumar, both former associates of ace director AR Murugadoss, the film promises to be a breath of fresh air in this season of ghost flicks. At least, that’s what their spokesperson repeatedly told us.
