Firecrackers and drums were a must, in addition to the paal abhishekam (milk bath) done to the massive cut-outs of Vijay, with garlands around it. And while the audience gathered around the theatre before the film began, the police, as usual stayed vigilante.
Here are some of the moments from the celebrations:
Kasi Theatre in Vadapalani is all decked-up not just for Deepavali but mostly for Vijay’s Mersal. A lot of these cut-outs are sponsored by ardent fans of the actor, with their fan association and details given at the bottom of each hoarding.

The bigger cut-out gets the paal abhishekam, with a fan climbing up the scaffold to add more garlands.
The dancing begins. While some like to dance without inhibitions, others prefer look on.
WWE wrestler Triple H makes an appearance, too.
This young boy appears to be thoroughly enjoying himself before the film.
‘Thala’ etched on the drum, there’s no points for guessing for whom the drum rolls.
These theatre-goers are also dressed like Vijay in his ‘Mersal’ look.
With flowers from the celebration strewn all over, it look as though the entrance now has a floral carpet ready. And coconuts, too.
A policeman watches the revelry with the signboard – “5AM show cancelled” – next to him.
