Weekend Watch: Oru Nalla Naal Paarthu Solren, Madura Veeran, Padai Veeran, Hey Jude

February 2 has turned out to be quite an important day for all the films that got postponed last month. Vijay Sethupathi’s first release this year, a revamped Shanmuga Pandian, Trisha’s Malayalam debut, and a few others are set to release, with nothing major from the Hindi film industry.

Oru Nalla Naal Paarthu Solren (Tamil)

Directed by Arumugakumar, the film has Sethupathi sporting several looks, including that of an afro and a mythical overlord. The film also features Gautham Karthik, Niharika Konidela, and Gayathrie.

Vijay Sethupathi plays a tribal leader in this film. He will sport eight different looks for his character, Yaman. The film has been mostly shot in the forests of Andhra Pradesh. Niharika, a Tollywood actress and Chiranjeevi’s niece, is making her Tamil debut with this adventure comedy.

With music by Justin Prabhakaran, there’s a lot to look forward to in this comedy-fantasy film.

Madura Veeran (Tamil)

Madura Veeran, a Jallikattu-inspired movie which was earlier set to release during Pongal, will finally hit the screens on February 2. Written and directed by cinematographer PG Muthiah, the film stars Shanmuga Pandian and Samuthirakani in the lead roles.

In an earlier interview with Silverscreen, PG Muthiah revealed that the movie is not about the Jallikattu protests that Tamil Nadu witnessed last year. He said: “The film is not about the protest, or the controversy surrounding the sport, but about the tradition. I could not have avoided the reference to the Marina protest in the script, simply because it was very significant. Usually, in a film based on sports, there will be sub-plots with love, friendship or betrayal. In this film, there is no deviation from the central theme.” Muthiah also added that the script talks about the game and the politics associated with it.

Padai Veeran (Tamil)

Written and directed by Dhana, the film is a drama set in a village. Dhana, a protege of Mani Ratnam, is making his directorial debut. Apart from Vijay Yesudas and Bharathiraja in the lead, the film has newcomer Amritha as the female lead.

With music by Karthik Raja, the songs are perhaps the highlight, featuring singers like Chinmayi, Yuvan Shankar Raja and Haricharan.

Yemaali (Tamil)

A Tamil romantic thriller, Yemaali is directed by VZ Durai, best known for directing the Ajith Kumar-starrer Mughavari (2000). The film stars Samuthirakani, Athulya Ravi, Sam Jones, and Roshni Prakash, and will explore modern relationships.

The film’s teaser was out in November and had courted controversy over Athulya Ravi’s character smoking and drinking. In the teaser, Athulya looks glamorous, smokes, rides a bike and shows her middle finger. Following the attack by trolls, she put out an apology on her Facebook page for “disappointing” some of her fans.

She plays play Ri2 (Ritu), an ultra-modern girl and a positive character. The film has music by Sam D Raj and dialogues written by Durai and Jeyamohan.

Hey Jude (Malayalam)

Actress Trisha Krishnan makes her Mollywood entry with Hey Jude, starring alongside Nivin Pauly. Directed by Shyamaprasad, the film looks like it’s a slice of life film. The beautiful locales of Goa gives it a dreamy look. Nivin Pauly, as Jude, has a nerdy look while Trisha, who plays Crystal, gives the vibes of a manic pixie girl.

The film’s songs are equally breezy with several composers collaborating, including Rahul Raj, Ouseppachan, Gopi Sunder, and M Jayachandran.
