The trailer of Harish Kalyan starrer Dharala Prabhu is out now. Helmed by Yuddham Sharanam fame Krishna Marimuthu, the film is being bankrolled by Screen Scene Media Entertainment. Though the film marks the Tamil feature film debut for the director, he previously directed a promo musical ‘The Mercury Song’ for director Karthik Subbaraj’s Mercury in 2018. He was also a former assistant of director AL Vijay.
In the film, Kannadasan (Vivek) has fixed his mind on Prabhu (Harish Kalyan) as a sperm donor who can help cure couples with infertility. All goes well with the deal until his girlfriend (Tanya Hope) says she’d like to have a baby. After that, a thus far jovial and chic Prabhu turns helpless and confused, is ditched by his girlfriend, slapped by his mother (Anupama Kumar), and pursued by a relentless Vivek. The well-cut trailer is uplifted by a funky background score (credit to the eight composers). Vivek’s trademark pun in the end did manage to crack me up.
Actor Jayam Ravi took to Twitter to release the trailer.

The film is an official remake of the Ayushmann Khurrana–Yami Gautam hit Vicky Donor (2012). The story in itself was inspired by the 2011 Canadian movie Starbuck. Vicky Donor was a romantic comedy set against the backdrop of sperm donation and infertility and it won the National Film Award for ‘Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment’ at the 60th National Film Awards. It was also remade in Telugu as Naruda Donoruda starring actors Sumanth and Pallavi Subhash.
Thadam fame Tanya Hope is acting opposite Harish and actor-comedian Vivek has landed the role of the doctor (Annu Kapoor in the original). RS Shivaji, Aaditya TV fame Akalya Venkatesan, and Kumari Sachu also feature in significant roles. On the technical front, Selvakumar Sk is handling cinematography, Kripakaran is editing and Kamal is handling the production design. ‘Stunner’ Sam will be choreographing stunt, Yashwanth choreographing dance and Pallavi Singh on costumes. Subu and Sudarshan Narasimhan have penned the story of Dharala Prabhu.
The makers have roped in eight prominent music directors to compose for the film for a collaborative album instead of a conventional one to ‘bring in more flavour to the film’. The list comprises of composers Vivek Siva and Mervin J Solomon who recently composed for Pattas, Oorka The Band that made its debut in the industry with Aadai, Inno Genga, a British playback singer known for ‘Kannamma’ from Ko 2 and ‘Ullalaa’ from Petta, Sean Roldan who has composed for Pa Paandi and Velai Illa Pattadhaari 2, Bharath Shankar from the Oorka Band for a separate composition, Kaber Vasuki who is debuting as music director for Sillukaruppatti fame Halitha Shameem‘s next Aelay, Madley Blues that has composed for Sutta Kadhai (2013) and for the title track of Tamil Bigg Boss, and Anirudh Ravichander who recently composed for Darbar.
Two songs from the film have been released, ‘Aaha Ooho’ and ‘Unnaal Penne’. While the former has been composed by Oorka The Band with Bharath Shankar on the lyrics, the latter is by Inno Genga with director Vignesh Shivn penning lyrics. Videos from the dance rehearsals of ‘Aaha Ooho’ were also released recently.
