Aamir Khan, at a recent event, said that he would like to take the full responsibility for the failure of his Diwali release – Thugs of Hindostan. Though they went wrong with the film, he guaranteed that the team had put in their best efforts.
Speaking at the Cinestaan India’s Storytellers Contest, Khan said “I think we went wrong. I would like to take full responsibility for that. You can be sure we tried our level best.” The actor went ahead and apologized to those audiences whose expectations could not be met.
When asked about the reason for the film’s failure, Khan said “I am not very comfortable talking about these things in public. My film is like my child. So failure is also mine.” The movie has been dubbed as Khan’s first flop in 18 years. His last major flop was the 2000 release Mela.
Directed by Dhoom 3 director Vijay Krishna Acharya, Thugs of Hindostan released on November 8 and raked in more than Rs.50 crore to become the biggest opener in the history of Indian cinema. Resulting from the subsequent negative reviews and word of mouth, the collections took a dip and following an 18 day run at the box office, the film only earned Rs.150.32 crores.
Made on a budget of Rs.300 crore, Thugs of Hindostan, the most expensive Bollywood film, marked the coming together of Amitabh Bachchan and Khan while also featuring Katrina Kaif and Fatima Sana Sheikh in supporting roles. Produced by Yash Raj Studios, the film was dubbed into regional languages like Telugu and Tamil.
After having faced equal rejection from other international markets, Thugs of Hindostan now looks forward to its China release. Indian films and Aamir Khan in particular enjoy a huge fan following in China. The actor said that the release would be happening next month in the country.
