Aamir Khan’s Diwali release Thugs of Hindostan will now release in China on December 28. Despite having flopped in India, it is believed that the movie will do well in China owing to Aamir Khan’s popularity in the country after the success of movies like Dangal and 3 Idiots in China.
Directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya of Dhoom 3 fame, Thugs of Hindostan marked the coming together of Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan for the first time. Produced by Yash Raj Films, the movie also featured Katrina Kaif and Fatima Sana Sheikh, and was the most expensive Bollywood film of the year. Despite having a big opening, it tanked at the box office following the negative word of mouth generated after the opening day.
While the China release might come as a relief to the makers, their plans could be thwarted by Akshay Kumar’s Padman which is scheduled to release on December 14. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh spoke about these releases in China, and said in an NDTV report, “China, as a film market is akin to the goose that lays golden eggs. But you cannot expect every Indian film to strike gold at the China box office. While 102 Not Out fizzled out, hopes are pinned on the next two Hindi releases – Padman and Thugs Of Hindostan.”

Aamir Khan spoke about the failure of Thugs Of Hindostan in a recent interview, and said, “I think we went wrong. I would like to take full responsibility for that. You can be sure we tried our level best.” The actor then apologised to the audience whose expectations could not be met.
When asked about the reason for the film’s failure, he said “I am not very comfortable talking about these things in public. My film is like my child. So failure is also mine.” The movie is said to be Aamir Khan’s first flop in 18 years. His last major flop was the 2000 release Mela.
