The film is being helmed by Aakash Bhatia who had earlier directed the second season of the Amazon Prime Original, Inside Edge. Vivek Krishnani’s Sony Pictures Films India, Tanujj Garg, and Atul Kasbekar’s Ellipsis Entertainment and Aayush Maheshwari are all bankrolling the film.
Run Lola Run (1998) helmed by Tom Tykwer featured Franka Potente and Moritz Bleibtreu in the lead roles. The movie is about a girl named Lola who only had 20 minutes to secure 100,000 Deutsche Marks to save her boyfriend, Manni. The film broke the traditional narrative pattern and gave the audience three possible scenarios for the same situation depending on her encounters. It is noteworthy that Taapsee’s recent Tamil-Telugu bilingual Game Over, directed by Ashwin Saravanan, also had a similar narrative.

Run Lola Run premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 1998 and later went on to win several international awards, including at the Sundance Film Festival, as well as seven accolades at the German Film Awards. It received critical acclaim and was also a commercial success that had wide international distribution. It happened to be the most successful German film of 1998, scoring $7 million at the US box office.

“Looop Lapeta is a shining addition to our slate of clutter-breaking and compelling motion pictures. We love the amazing cast that has come on board to breathe life into this cutting-edge script,” said Vivek Krishnani, managing director, Sony Pictures Entertainment India to The Hollywood Reporter.
“We are emotional about this film, as it was the first to get green-lit at Ellipsis after our company was formed. When Aayush Maheshwari approached us with the remake rights, we agreed immediately and invested the better part of three years in working on various versions and drafts to adapt the German film to suit an Indian context,” said Tanujj and Atul according to a report on Screen Daily.
Looop Lapeta will commence with shoot in April of this year and is slated for release on 29 January 2021.
