Pahlaj Nihalani Reveals He Was Bullied By I&B Ministry When He Was The CBFC Chief

In an interview with IANS, former chief of the Central Board of Film Certification, Pahlaj Nihalani, alleged that he was bullied during his tenure from January 2015 to August 2017. He also expressed his shock over the parliamentary committee’s decision to question director Sanjay Leela Bhansali on Padmavati before the censor board could view the film.

“During my tenure, I was bullied by the I&B Ministry into taking decisions. Now it’s a free-for all. Any and every governing body can question a film. Where does that leave the CBFC?” he said.

He further questioned the functions of the CBFC if parliamentary committees intervene even before the board could certify the film. “Why is one of India’s best filmmakers being made to explain himself over and over again? And why is the CBFC not taking steps to clear the air once and for all,” Nihalani added.

Padmavati Row: Juhi Chawla Thinks It’s Not Right When Fans Of An Actress Go Against Her

Giving her two cents on the issues prevailing over Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film Padmavati, actress Juhi Chawla finds it unsettling that fans of an actress would resort to threats, something which Deepika Padukone is currently facing. Deepika, along with the director, has been receiving death threats from fringe groups for being a part of the film and speaking her mind.

Speaking at a book launch, Juhi said:

“I am not speaking of Padmavati the film but the threats were not right. You watch the same heroine in other films, go crazy for her, you love her so much, she has tremendous fan following. Then, to threaten her like this, I didn’t feel was right. At the end of the day, films are made by directors, by the team (and) you’re playing a part. Just for that reason, I’d say a little sensitivity is (needed) and people should have patience. Not flare up and say things like that, that too to a woman.”

Several celebrities have spoken about the row over the epic drama. The film has been embroiled in a massive row ever since Bhansali announced the project. From facing assaults to protesters declaring bandhs at Chittorgarh Fort, a lot has been stirred with even the Uttar Pradesh government and Rajasthan’s Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje asking the Information and Broadcasting Ministry to defer the project.
