Aha Tamil Bags Digital Rights of Samuthirakani-Starrer ‘Writer’

The digital rights of Writer, the recently-released Tamil film starring director-actor Samuthirakani, has been bagged by Aha Tamil, a source confirmed to Silverscreen India.

The crime drama, which released in theatres on December 24, 2021, is expected arrive on the streaming platform by the end of January or early February, the source added. An official announcement on the same is yet to be made.

It is to be noted that Writer will be part of Aha’s first slate of Tamil content. The OTT platform which, so far, has been rolling out content only in Telugu, is set to soon venture into the Tamil market.

Founded by veteran Telugu producer-distributor Allu Aravind in February 2020, Aha boasts a catalogue that includes acclaimed films like Love Story and Senapathi, and the talk show Unstoppable with NBK, hosted by Nandamuri Balakrishna.

On the occasion of Pongal 2022, the streamer did a soft launch of its new Tamil wing and created social media handles for it as well. A source from the OTT platform, on condition of anonymity, said, “There is a team in Chennai, which has been working on launching the platform in Tamil. Aha Tamil will have content exclusively for the Tamil audience, along with originals. There might be a change in schedule due to the third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, but it is expected to be officially launched shortly.”

Writer is produced by filmmaker-producer Pa Ranjith under his Neelam Productions banner, along with Abhayanand Singh, Piiyush Singh, and Aditi Anand. Written and directed by debutant filmmaker Franklin Jacob, the film revolves around a helpless but good-hearted police station writer (played by Samuthirakani) and touches upon issues such as caste discrimination, illegal custody, and police brutality. The film, which was greeted with positive reviews upon release, also features actors Lizzie Antony, VJ Maheshwari, Kavitha Bharathi, and Iniya, among others.
