Ayushmann Khurrana’s sleeper hit Andhadhun is set to release in China as Piano Player. The crime thriller directed by Sriram Raghavan, featured Khurrana as a blind piano player, and went on to become a huge success critically and commercially.
According to DC, Andhadhun is Sriram Raghavan’s first film to release in China. “I am super thrilled that Andhadhun is releasing in China. Ten years back, on a visit to China, I walked into a Beijing Cafe and was zapped to see Nasir Husain’s Caravan playing on a big screen. Dubbed in Chinese except for the songs. I was told the film was the favourite Indian film of that generation. I am curious how the Chinese audience responds to our musical thriller,” Raghavan explained in a statement. He has directed successful films like Badlapur and Johnny Gaddar.
Andhadhun, also featuring Tabu and Radhika Apte, was jointly produced by Viacom18 Motion Pictures and Matchbox Pictures. Viacom18 along with Eros International has now partnered with Tang Media Partners to release the movie in China. Ajit Andhare, COO, Viacom18 Studios said, “I am happy to announce that Viacom18 Studios has secured its maiden release in China and that too with our favourite film Andhadhun. I am very excited about our film’s prospect at the China box office and celebrating what is a major first for the studio.”
Kevin Tang of Tang Media Partners said that Andhadhun would be the first Indian movie with a thriller format to release in the country. Andhadhuan was co-written by its director Sriram Raghavan, along with Arijit Biswas, Pooja Ladha Surti, Yogesh Chandekar and Hemanth Rao. The story was about a piano player who becomes involved in the murder of a former actor.
Indian movies have been increasingly popular among the Chinese. From 3 Idiots and PK to Dangal and Secret Superstar, Hindi films have set the Chinese box office ringing. Small budget films like Hindi Medium and Hichki were successful in the country. Director Suseenthiran’s upcoming Tamil film Kennedy Club will also release in China.
