Anuradha Paudwal: Remixes Take Away The Soul Of Music

Anuradha Paudwal, one of Bollywood’s most popular singers in the ’90s, has said she is not a fan of the current Bollywood trend of remixing old songs. Her 1990 chartbuster “Tamma Tamma” from the movie Thanedaar was remixed by rapper and music composer Badshah. It featured in the recently released Badrinath Ki Dulhania, starring Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan.

However, Anuradha Paudwal said that even the idea of remixing used to upset her at one time. Speaking to Mid-Day, she said, “They took away the essence and soul of the original songs. Gaane vidhwansak ho gaye hain (songs have a destructive tone nowadays). But now, I realise that this is how the newer generation expresses love. I wonder how they still appreciate Sufi music, which is so soulful.”

She further said, “People make and sell trash in the name of trends these days.”

Anuradha Paudwal, who is a Padma Shri awardee, is popularly remembered for several chart-busters in Tezaab (1988), Aashiqui (1990), Dil (1990) and Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin (1991), among others.

Her last playback song was “Kismat Se Tum” in Pukaar (2000).

Anuradha Paudwal withdrew from film singing at the peak of her career to pursue her passion for devotional music. Although she said she didn’t identify with today’s film music, she said she would be willing to sing for composer duo Atul-Ajay, if given the chance.
