AR Rahman To Work With Iranian Director Majid Majidi Again

Noted Iranian filmmaker Majid Majidi has roped in national award-winning composer AR Rahman for his next project. Initially rumoured to have been titled Floating Gardens, the film is now titled Beyond The Clouds and will be made in Hindi with an all-Indian cast, according to a statement from the filmmaker. It will be filmed within the country as well. Apart from Rahman, Bollywood actor Shahid Kapoor’s younger brother Ishaan Khatter will also be a part of the film. 

Majidi, who first came to India in August last year, has been travelling around the country to find for suitable locations, Tehran Times reports. The film is produced by Zee Studios and Eye Candy Films and began shooting on Monday (23 January). It will reportedly focus on relationships, particularly that of siblings. Known for striking a chord in his films such as Children of Heaven (1997) and The Colour of Paradise (1999), Majidi’s upcoming Hindi film is inspired from India’s rich culture and heritage.

“Filmmakers like Satyajit Ray, whose work I adore, have represented India’s culture, rich heritage and the lives of common people to a global audience. These visions and images have stayed in my mind for years and cajoled me to make a film in India. Finally , I’m in Mumbai with a lovely team to narrate a story woven around the lives of common people,” he was quoted saying during the announcement.

Rahman, who has worked on a number of international projects in the past including China’s Warriors of Heaven and Earth (2003), Oscar-winner Slumdog Millionaire (2009) and British-American film 127 Hours (2011), among others, will be collaborating with the Iranian filmmaker for the second time. The duo had earlier worked on Majidi’s Iranian Islamic epic Muhammad: The Messenger of God (2015). Rahman worked on the film’s score for a year and a half, along with the Palestinian musical group Le Trio Joubran.
