Bollywood actress Rakhi Sawant has been issued an arrest warrant by a local court in Ludhiana, Punjab for making derogatory statements about Sage Valmiki, the author of the epic Ramayana.
The arrest warrant was issued after a complaint was filed against the 38-year-old actress for allegedly hurting the religious sentiments of the Valmiki community. Rakhi is said to have made the comments at an event in 2016.
According to a Huffpost article, Sawant had – during a press conference last year – claimed that Valmiki, who was once a murderer, wrote the Ramayana later. “The actress was giving an example of how people and their situations change. Comparing Valmiki to singer Mika Singh who had forcibly kissed her during his birthday bash in 2014, Sawant said that like the Hindu sage, the singer had also now “changed” and was “innocent”,” the article said.
The report further added that a two-member team from the Ludhina police has left to Mumbai with the arrest warrant.
The actress had failed to appear before the court during the last hearing which was on March 9, despite repeated summons. The next hearing for the case is scheduled for April 10.
