Kannada remake of Vijay Sethupathi and Trisha’s 96, will star Malayalam actor Bhavana and Ganesh in lead roles. Directed by Preetham Gubbi, shoot for the movie begins early next year.
Having worked with the Kannada actor Ganesh in the 2012 film Romeo, Bhavana says she was intrigued by the offer when director Preetham Gubbi approached her to play Trisha’s role in 96. She says in a TOI report, “When Preetham came to me with the offer, I was intrigued because Ganesh was on board and I already have a good rapport with him. I also know that the Preetham-Ganesh combination has a good track record.”
Bhavana has always been apprehensive about remakes, she says. “Honestly, I am not a fan of remakes and have rejected offers earlier. I don’t understand how a version of a popular film will work with the viewers who have already seen the original.”
She was convinced to sign up for this remake after watching the original 96: “I was interested in the team. But I had to know what the film was about. Hence, I watched the original and I liked the story. It had a universal appeal.” She also adds, “The team needs me only for about 15-20 days and the shoot would be in Bengaluru, so it seemed convenient as well.”

Bhavana’s Kannada debut was opposite Puneeth Rajkumar in the 2010 film Jackie. After this she acted Chithiram Pesuthadi, which has been a favourite among people. This year her only release is Taguru – a Kannada film. She also has the Kannada films Inspector Vikram and Manjina Hani in the making.
96, starring Vijay Sethupati and Trisha, was directed by cinematographer turned director C Premkumar. It released in October and became a success. The Telugu remake rights for the movie was bought by producer Dil Raju. It was earlier reported that Trisha might reprise her role for the Telugu remake.
