A reboot of The Crow – a cult film starring Bruce Lee’s son Brandon Lee that released in 1994, will reportedly start production in January next year with Game of Thrones star Jason Momoa in the lead. According to The Wrap, the reboot will be directed by Colin Hardy, a music video director.
The Crow reboot is expected to be a re-telling of James O’Barr’s cult classic comic book. It was originally adapted for the 1994 film starring Brandon Lee and directed by Alex Proyas. Like the original, the story follows Eric Draven, a murder victim who returns from the dead, seeking vengeance on those who murdered him and his fiancée with the help of a mystical bird.
Author O’Barr had reportedly told fans last year that a reboot was definitely in the pipelines. When asked about whether the reboot would be similar to the 1994 film, the writer said that it would heavily depend on the original work. “The new movie is not a remake of the Brandon Lee film. It’s going right back to the book; it’s like a literal page-for-page adaptation of the book,” he said. O’Barr is heavily involved in the production of the reboot, telling fans he has “control of the soundtrack again” repeating a licensing request he made when selling the rights to the property for the first film, and that he’s working very close with the director on development of the movie.
The film marks Jason Momoa’s second time as a mystical hero. He is also playing Aquaman for Warner’s Justice League film. Audiences were first introduced to Momoa as the character in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
The actor’s role in The Crow had been speculated since last month, with the actor confirming the news with a photo on his official Instagram account with the director.

The movie adaptation of the comic book was first release in 1994 and became a box office hit, grossing over $50 million in the US. The film was also Brandon Lee’s official big break in Hollywood. On March in 1993, while filming for The Crow, Lee died of a gunshot wound in the sets, eight days before completing production. During a scene where Lee’s character walks into his apartment to find his fiancée being beaten and raped by thugs, Lee was accidentally shot by actor Michael Massee after he fired a .44 Magnum revolver directed at Lee. Lee’s stunt double Chad Stahelski was used as a stand-in and CGI was used to digitally superimpose Lee’s face onto the head of the double.
Meanwhile, the reboot will be produced by Relativity Studios.
