Produced by Aravinnd Singh, who also serves as the cinematographer, the film is written and directed by Vijay Kumar Rajendran. D Block marks the directorial debut of Vijay Kumar, who shot to fame through the YouTube channel Eruma Saani.
Speaking to Silverscreen India about the film, Vijay Kumar said, “It is a thriller set in a college campus, and it is based on an incident that happened to my sister in Coimbatore, about ten years ago. As the title suggests, the story takes place in the D Block of a college hostel, where everything is peaceful and happy in the morning, but things take a turn for the worse by evening. People will have some thrilling and fearful moments while watching the film, but there is also some comedy.”
The filmmaker added that Arulnithi will be essaying the role of a first-year college student in the film.
Vijay Kumar, who had the aspiration to direct films even before he began to work on Eruma Saani videos, has directed around 30-40 short films. “However, it just so happened that I began to act in Eruma Saani. While working on the script of D Block, I also acted in a few films. One of these was K-13 (2019) with Arulnithi. So I told him about the script, and eventually narrated it to him in January 2020.”
“Later, I spoke to Aravinnd Singh about it when we were working together on Natpe Thunai (2019),” he added.
D Block went on floors in 2020 and was wrapped in June 2021. It was shot completely in Chennai.
The film is currently in the final stages of post-production. It has three songs, composed by Ron Ethan Yohan, while the background score by Kaushik Krish, who has previously worked with Vijay Kumar in Eruma Saani.
Asked about the film’s release, the director said, “We are planning for a theatrical release, but nothing has been finalised yet.”
