“Heroines Should Demand More Songs For Themselves”: Singers Tell Anupama Chopra

Gender discrimination on sets has been called out by actors and technicians for a while, now. In a latest interview with film-critic Anupama Chopra, female singers expressed their displeasure at sexism in the music industry as well.

Singers Neha Bhasin, Neeti Mohan, Aditi Singh Sharma and Jonita Gandhi explained why there’s no female Arijit Singh in Bollywood yet.

When the question of an Arijit Singh-equivalent was asked by Ms. Chopra, Neeti Mohan began with a “thank you” gesture for raising it, and said, “There aren’t enough female songs in Bollywood.”

Aditi added, “If an album has seven songs, 90 percent of the time, five of the songs will be male, while two would be female, or one would be a female song and the other a duet.”

Other observations made by the singers:

  1. Most of the songs have women singing two lines – why can’t it be the other way around?
  2. Female singers are ‘accommodated’ into a song and there is no consideration or scope for their vocal range most of the time.
  3. Heroines need to stand up and demand more songs for themselves.
