From ‘Aaraattu’ to ‘Naaradhan’: 6 Malayalam Films Releasing in Theatres Soon

With the decline in Covid-19 cases in Kerala and the subsequent easing of restrictions, the makers of many Malayalam films have announced new release dates. Earlier, many films were postponed indefinitely owing to the surge in cases and consequent shutting down of theatres in some parts of the state.

Silverscreen India brings you a list of six Malayalam films that are set to premiere on the big screens in the coming days.

Aaraattu – February 18

Actor Mohanlal essays the lead role in this upcoming film, co-produced and directed by filmmaker Unnikrishnan B. Aaraattu is touted to be a mass entertainer, in which Mohanlal takes on the character of Ganabhushanam Neyyattinkara Gopan. The film also has a supporting cast that includes actors Neil Vincent, Shraddha Srinath, Siddique and Vijayaraghavan, among several others. The film was previously scheduled to release on February 10, but the makers have pushed it to February 18.

Archana 31 Not Out – February 11

Actor Aishwarya Lekshmi plays the titular role of Archana, a school teacher from a small town, in this film. Produced by filmmaker Martin Prakkat, Siby Chavara and Renjith Nair, Archana 31 Not Out is directed by Akhil Anilkumar. It also features actors Indrans and Ramesh Pisharody in pivotal roles. 

Kallan D’Souza February 11

This comedy-drama film, starring Soubin Shahir, Dileesh Pothan, Surabhi Lakshmi and Hareesh Kanaran, was postponed from opening on January 27, in view of the pandemic. Kallan D’Souza is produced by Ramshi Ahamed in association with Sandra Thomas and Thomas Joseph Pattathanam. In an earlier conversation with Silverscreen India, Jithu said that Soubin plays the titular role, inspired by the eponymous character played by the actor in the 2015 Malayalam film Charlie, while Dileesh essays a police officer. However, the film is not a spin-off. 

Veyil – February 25

This Shane Nigam-starrer, which was earlier set to release on January 28, has now been pushed to February 25. Directed by Sarath Menon, Veyil is produced by Joby George, under the Goodwill Entertainments banner. The film also features Shine Tom Chacko and James Elia. The makers said the film’s premiere was deferred after considering the requests of film exhibitors and the health of cinema goers.

Upacharapoorvam Gunda Jayan February 25

Led by actors Shaiju Kurup and Siju Wilsonthis film is a comedy-family entertainer. Set to hit theatres on January 28, the film’s opening was rescheduled by the production house, Wayfarer Films, in view of the rise in Covid-19 cases.

In an earlier conversation with Silverscreen India, the film’s director Arun Vaiga said, “Upacharapoorvam Gunda Jayan follows the events at a house hosting a wedding, over the course of a day. This is Shaiju Kurup’s 100th film and he plays the role of a former gunda, who is now a changed, family man. Siju plays the bride’s friend.”

The supporting cast includes actors Shabareesh, Johny Antony, Sudhir Karamana, Hareesh Kanaran, and Jaffer Idukki.

NaaradhanMarch 3

This political thriller featuring Tovino Thomaswas earlier slated for release on January 27 and has now been postponed to March 3. Directed by Aashiq Abu, Naaradhan is jointly produced by Santhosh Kuruvila, Rima Kallingal, and Aashiq Abu. Thomas plays the role of a news anchor named Chandraprakash and the film also features actors Anna Ben, Indrans, Renji Panicker, and Sharaf U Dheen, among several others.

While films like the ones listed above have confirmed their premieres, the makers of big budget films like Salute and Thuramukham have notably not announced their new dates of release as yet.
