The original movie starred Ramarajan and Kanaka in the lead with Goundamani, Senthil, Santhana Bharathi, Chandrasekhar, Ganthimathi and Kovai Sarala in supporting roles.

Gangai Amaran told Cinema Express, “The sequel will focus on what happened to the lead couple, Goundamani, Senthil, their kids and how their families fared. The first draft of the script is ready and I am in talks with the artistes. I want to bring in everyone from the original, except Gandhimathi and Shanmugasundaram. I will make an official announcement soon, after work on the re-writes is done.”

The film revolved around a Karagattam dancer who falls in love with another dancer played by Kanaka (the daughter of actress Devika made her acting debut with this film). It was also considered one of Ramarajan’s best movies, and ran successfully for 425 days.

Gangai Amaran revealed much later that he  created the film, one scene at at a time. The music by Ilaiyaraaja was a super-hit, with songs such as  ‘Maanguyilae Poonguyile’ and ‘Ooru Vittu Ooru Vandhu’ becoming classics. He also composed the background score without knowing the plot. The highlight was Senthil and Goundamani’s comedy scenes that contributed hugely to the film’s success. The famous banana comedy clip was from this film.

Senthil and Goundamani have been in cinema for over 40 years. They used to act in about 10 films every year during the 80s and 90s, but were seen in fewer movies post 2000. Senthil took a break for health reasons, and made a comeback with Vignesh Shivn’s directorial Thaana Serndha Koottam last year. Goundamani was last seen in films such as 49-O and Enakku Veru Engum Kilaigal Kidayaadhu.
