Gopi Nainar’s Next Is A Biopic On Tribal Leader Birsa Munda

Gopi Nainar at the Aramm Press Meet

Gopi Nainar’s next is a biopic about Birsa Munda, a freedom fighter from the Munda tribe. In conversation with Silverscreen, Nainar said that he wants to make the film in the Munda language to keep it as authentic as possible. “Currently we are in talks with the production company. They want me to do the film in Tamil, whereas I want to do the film in the Munda language and then translate it to Tamil and other languages.”

“What I’m more conscious about the film is that it should not have established actors. So I’m planning to cast new faces,” he added.

Nainar wanted to make his film debut with the Birsa Munda biopic. “I got to know about him when I was 23 years old and started to learn more about him. At first, books about him in Tamil were not available. So I enlisted the help of my friend to translate a biography of Birsa written in English. I did not know the language very well and so I had to wait for the translation. Later on there were books about him in Tamil too, after which I started to write the script. After this  I started writing my script about the tribal leader. Actually, I wanted to make my directorial debut with this film only. However it involved a huge budget as it was a period drama. So I could not do it.”

The director, who is currently working on an untitled project with Aishwarya Rajesh and Jai in lead roles, said that the script for the Munda biopic has been completed. “We will start the project once my second film gets done. The script is completed and we plan to start shooting sometime soon.”

According to a report in The New Indian Express, the team plans to begin pre-production work in a couple of weeks.

“They are known for their physique. It isn’t the usual six-pack abs we see in our films. Only based on our research will we decide who will be playing the characters in the film. The research will also give us insights into their lifestyle,” Nainar said.

Details of the cast and crew for the new film will be made available by the production house by November this year.
