Gunasekhar Will Direct A Film About Prahalada; From Hiranyakashipa’s Perspective

Director Gunasekhar, who last made Rudhramadevi, is making a film on the tale of Prahalada. The story will be told from the perspective of the antagonist, his father Hiranyakashipu. The director has registered the title ‘Hiranyakashipa The Story of “Bhakta Prahlad”‘with the Telugu Film Chamber. Reports suggest that the director has already roped in a well-known Tamil actor to play Hiranyakashipa.

Prahlada appears in Vedic literature as a devotee who defies his abusive father even as a young boy.

Speaking to Hans India, the director said that the script of the film had not yet been finalised. He said, “I’m yet to announce the project officially. It’s still in early stages of discussions.”
A source also told Hans India that Gunsekhar was inspired by the way Hollywood had retold the classic Jungle Book in a new way. With ‘Hiranyakashipa– The Story of ‘Bhakta Prahlad’, he wants to do something similar. According to the source, “He has been toying with this idea for the past few months but is maintaining utmost secrecy. He wants to convene a presser and announce the project grandly.”
Rudhramadevi, starring Anushka Shetty, released amidst much hype, but failed to meet audience expectations largely because of poor screenwriting. The film grossed Rs. 57.62 crore in its opening week, after making Rs.32 crore in its opening weekend. It was however recommended by the Film Federation of India (among other films) as India’s Oscar submission. After Rudhramadevi, Gunasekhar announced that he would continue to do films about the Kakatiya Dynasty with his next film ‘Prataparudra-The Last Emperor’.
